Paper Making Workshop in Mérida, Yucatán, mexico
Friday, Jan 3, 2025
A great day in Merida, Yucatan: Our Friend and Artist Mark Callahan hosted a discussion and a papermaking workshop with writers from Millsaps University and local author and poet Jonathan Harrington. Jonathan read from and talked about 2 of his books, Lift Up The Stone: The gospel according to Jonathan, and The Frozen Sea Within Us: new and selected poems.
Mark creates products and works of art using Handmade Mayan paper (HUNN-paper in Mayan) and is happy to show students of all ages how it's done. From the vat of paper pulp to the mould and deckle, he specializes in an authentic Mayan paper-making process utilizing Cat tail fibers from the north coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.
What made this gathering special is that we had students, writers, artists, and teachers all in attendance to absorb, understand, and appreciate the feeling of making something with your hands that's directly related to writing and artistic endeavors, crossing cultures and disciplines.
